Fraud Prevention Tools

Fraud prevention tools allow you to automatically void suspicious non-device payments taken from Virtual Terminal and the ecommerce API. They don’t block payments taken from your device. By default, all Hazlnut orders require the Card Verification Value (CVV) and a matching, valid expiration date.

Please let us know if you would like to prevent fraudulent transactions by checking the billing addresses your customers provide with the Clover Address Verification System (AVS).

Clover's AVS has 2 options, both of which we support on Hazlnut:

  • Postal Code
  • Street Address

How to turn on (Clover):

You can enable it by going to your Clover dashboard (please do this from a web browser)
  1. Click on Account & Setup on the bottom left
  2. Under the 'Transaction' group, click on Fraud Tools
  3. Click to 'Show Rules' for the Address Verification System (AVS) group
  4. Here, there are 6 options that perform different functions.
  5. Make your selection, and click 'Save'.
  6. Please contact support@hazlnut.com with the name of your business, location short name (nickname) and the AVS tool(s) you have turned on.

How do they work?

  • Postal Code does not match (when provided)
    • You can enable this if you only wish to reject orders when zip code is provided but does not match. Not all systems you are using will need to ask for the a zip code field.
    • This can be turned on without affecting Hazlnut orders.
  • Postal Code not verified
    • Postal code field must be provided and verified by the card-issuing bank.
    • Not recommended
    • The card-issuing bank received the postal code, but was unable to confirm or deny whether it matched the information on file.
  • Postal Code not provided
    • This will require a zip code for all orders paid with a card.
    • Zip code field will need to be turned on for your Hazlnut business account.
  • Street Address does not match (when provided)
    • You can enable this if you only wish to reject orders when street address is provided but does not match. Not all systems you are using will need to require a street address field.
    • This can be turned on without affecting Hazlnut orders.
  • Street Address not verified
    • Street address field must be provided and verified by the card-issuing bank.
    • Not recommended
    • The card-issuing bank received the street address information, but was unable to confirm or deny whether it matched the information on file.
  • Street Address not provided
    • This will require a zip code for all orders paid with a card.
    • The street address field will need to be turned on for your Hazlnut business account.

We will need to turn on the fields for Hazlnut orders so customers can successfully place an order, otherwise customers will receive an error trying to pay online without the zip code or street address.

If you do decide to enable it, let us know the name of your business, the name of your location, and we will add those fields to your ordering site.
